In the last few years Gijs Frieling has occupied a unique position in the world of painting. Frieling is inspired by different sources, among them folk art and Christian iconography. He tries to combine the things he loves into a grand unity and this evokes a feeling of inexhaustability. 'My work is an attempt to present the development of painting as an entity in which the differences between fine art, folk art, religious painting, 'high art' and the avant-garde are merely contextual. Painting is visual knowledge, and at the same time an accumulation of actions. I want to give these reflective and performative aspects an equal place.' more
