Shaping Solidarity in the Arts: Soup, conversation and a book launch!

  • On Saturday the 18th of February, in collaboration with de Appel and Platform BK, we will be organizing the event: ‘Shaping Solidarity in the Arts’, connecting to the Valiz publication Art & Solidarity Reader, edited by Katja García-Antón, in cooperation with OCA, Norway.

In recent years, solidarity has come to be a key point within art practices, binding artists and activists together against common societal issues.
Why is solidarity such an important ideal? What makes solidarity a re-occurring feature within the art field? How might solidarity be approached and defined differently between various practices?
During ‘Shaping Solidarity in the Arts, various artists and activists will be asked to share their perspective on solidarity in context with their practice, inviting to a further discussion. Alongside the collective Mirror Soup Kitchen (Jasper van den Berg, Jet Sanders and Roel Wouters) and Ukrainian activist/artist collective Kukhnia (online, operating in Lviv), will make and serve soup. Participants will be welcome to help prepare the soup while they share their thoughts on art and solidarity amongst one another.
Finally, the evening will close with music by Radio Alhara.

Speakers include Eszter Szakács and Lara Khaldi, both contributors to the Arts & Solidarity Reader. They will discuss historical examples of art and solidarity as well as different models of institutional and non-institutional solidarity. Other contributors to the programme include: Rosa te Velde, Gizem Üstüner, Yazan Khalili, Jue Yang and the platform Art Goss, who will be facilitating the conversations during the event.

Donations to the soup and programme are welcome (voluntary). These will be given to Kukhnia. There will also be a chance to buy a copy of Art and Solidarity Reader.

We are hoping that together, we will develop a deeper understanding of what the meaning of solidarity in the arts is, or could be.

Location: De Appel, Schipluidenstraat 12, Amsterdam
Date and Time: 18.02.2023, 16:00–20:00
For those who would like to volunteer to help with preparing the soup, please meet us at 14:30 at the entrance hall of de Appel.
Free participation but limited space available. Reserve a spot via: kantoor@platformbk.nl

About the speakers/contributors:

Art Goss is a platform for high effort art gossip, founded in November 2020 by artists/writers L. Artimer and M. Gossamer. Art Goss publishes critical views and observations on the Dutch cultural sector through installation, performance and online platforms. It reclaims gossip as a force of legitimate, political knowledge production, as a means to tackle inequalities and institutionalised violences of the art world.

Lara Khaldi is the new artistic director of de Appel. Khaldi also works as an artist, writer, educator and has been a co-curator of documenta fifteen.

Yazan Khalili is an architect, visual artist and cultural activist. He is also co-founder of Radio Alhara.

Kukhnia is an activist and artist collective that operates in Lviv, Ukraine. Starting as a small group of volunteers, it now provides food to various refugee shelters across the city on a daily basis.

Mirror Soup Kitchen is a collective founded by Jasper van den Berg, Jet Sanders and Roel Wouters. The collective makes soup that resembles meals of countries struck by war. The income will be given to a locally based charity.

Radio Alhara is a radio station launched in Palestine during the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides a platform for discussion, listening and community building.

Eszter Szakács is a researcher, curator and Ph.D. candidate at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) at the University of Amsterdam, where she is taking part in the project IMAGINART.

Gizem Üstüner graduated from the HKU and is performer and maker, interested in precarity in the arts field.

Rosa te Velde is a researcher and educator at KABK and Sandberg Instituut. Rosa is interested in the politics of design and national identity, decoloniality, race and gender.

Jue Yang is an artist, writer, filmmaker, critic and strong advocate for fair practice among art workers as a solidarity practice.
