The ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture is awarded to artists and thinkers who, according to the ECF, enrich democracy with their imagination. The theme for the 2019 awards is: Democracy needs imagination. The laureates of the ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture 2019 are Ahdaf Soueif (Cairo / London) & City of Women Festival (Ljubljana). The two laureates represent different cultural approaches, but both offer a hopeful vision of democracy by redefining our understanding of culture and its ability to improve a common European social reality. The Princes Margriet Award for Culture will be awarded for the eleventh time this year.

The European Cultural Foundation (ECF) nurtures a socially engaged and culturally rooted civil society across Europe and is the organizer of the awards. ECF is celebrating its 65th anniversary during the ceremony. Valiz has collaborated with ECF on a number of publications: No Culture, No Europe (2015); The Art of Civil Action (2017); Courageous Citizens (2018); and most recently https://www.valiz.nl/en/publications/lost-in-media.html (2019).
