The École Supérieure d’Art de Lorraine – Metz campus is hosting the sixth edition of the Exemplaires Biennial on Thursday 26, Friday 27 and Saturday 28 March in Metz. Dedicated to contemporary publishing practices, the biennial explores the changing face of publishing: the rise of digital media, developments in printing technologies and new modes of publication. The biennial contributes to this discussion through the graphic and editorial design workshops of the fourteen participating French-speaking art and design schools. Each school is free to choose its own field of investigation, offering a vibrant and open panorama of current forms of French-language editorial design.
The Exemplaires Biennial is a time for exhibiting, crystallising and showcasing the work carried out by students and teaching staff. It is also a venue for meeting and exchange, enriched by a symposium and several exhibitions linked to the research themes of the participating schools. The main exhibition highlights a selection of recent French-language publications deemed ‘exemplary’. These selections, which resonate with the themes explored, may be accompanied by reference works. To extend and complement this selection, each school produces a publication in a free-form format.
The biennial also includes an international academic symposium dedicated to contemporary editorial design. It brings together historians, researchers, designers, publishers and artists. Finally, a series of satellite events punctuate the three-day programme, including an exhibition in partnership with 49 Nord 6 Est – Frac Lorraine, a festive evening and a graphic design fair featuring a selection of independent publishers.
