You are warmly invited to the launch of Moments of Meaning-Making, the 50th publication by cultural theorist, video artist, and writer Mieke Bal. This remarkable book—both her most personal and most associative—takes the form of an abecedarium, exploring concepts such as Anachronism, Becoming, Criticism, Friendship, and more. With photographs by Lena Verhoeff and design by Lotte Lara Schröder, it is as much a visual and tactile experience as it is a theoretical one.
Rather than a conventional autobiography, Moments of Meaning-Making is a mesh of memories and core concepts shaped by a lifetime of teaching, writing, and making. Several artists, writers, and scholars will respond to Bal’s work and reflect on the personal, intellectual, and collaborative influences she’s had on their own practices.
Speakers:
- Mieke Bal will introduce Moments of Meaning-Making, reflecting on the personal and intellectual journey that shaped this multifaceted publication.
- Tingting Hui reflects on multiplicity and Bal’s critique of biography-based criticism
- Roos Theuws shares how Bal’s sharp visual insight deepened her artistic understanding
- Marlene Dumas discusses the lasting impact of Bal’s titles and language on her work
- Maaike Meijer offers thoughts on memory, autobiography, and feminist reflection
- Abram de Swaan will share his reflections on Mieke Bal’s work and its resonance across disciplines.
Moderator: Astrid Vorstermans (Valiz)
