On the occasion of Offprint Paris Book Fair, Parsons Paris invited Valiz to present ‘Critical Publishing at Valiz: Reflecting on Art, Fashion and their Systems’ at Galerie 45. This exhibition highlights Valiz's role as an independent international publisher and its contributions to interdisciplinary critical thinking at large.
Exhibition
This exhibition presents a selection of Valiz titles that explore fashion and image-making, especially focusing on Radical Fashion Exercises: A Workbook of Modes and Methods, designed by Line Arngaard and edited by Laura Gardner and Daphne Mohajer va Pesaran. Radical Fashion Exercises contains over one hundred tried, tested, and speculative exercises that expand the way we look at fashion, how we are part of its system, and how we can practice fashion otherwise.
Designer Line Arngaard has made an installation of all the pages of this book, plus is showing scraps, sketches, email exchanges, reworked and found photos and more ephemera that show the process of ‘the making of…’. Parallel other Valiz books can be explored, that have a strong connection to creative and critical imaging, making and thinking.
The exhibition finally shows two videos: one of these exercises ‘Objects in Trouble’ that was created and produced by MA Fashion Studies students in collaboration with the Palais Galliera Musée de la Mode de Paris. The other with an interview with the book’s editors on their process of developing and defining Radical Fashion Exercises.
Vernissage (accessible to everyone)
On Friday 8 November (14.30 hr) Marco Pecorari (Parsons Paris) will introduce Astrid Vorstermans (Valiz), who will give a concise talk on Valiz’ editorial strategies, and on what independent and ‘critical’ publishing means in this context. Radical Fashion Exercises is an important case study for ‘critical fashion publishing’. Astrid will introduce Line Arngaard, who —as a designer— co-developed the specific requirements of this book. They will dive into the process of making, with some examples and ephemera to disclose this trajectory. Marco will then join this exchange and will dialogue with Astrid and Line on remaining issues, their roles and vision, and how to connect this to the effect and potential of ‘critical publishing’ for students, designers, society. The event will be wrapped up by giving the audience the opportunity to comment and ask questions.
