This first edition of the new biennial festival The Other Book promises to be a unique celebration of the art book. Apart from being an art book fair, The Other Book hosts exhibitions, workshops, lectures, presentations, demonstrations, films and performances at various locations. Each edition of this festival will focus on a certain type of 'other book'. The first edition of The Other Book (November 29 - December 1, 2019) is entirely devoted to the Riso revolution: art books produced with Risograph and Mimeograph stencil duplicators.

On Sunday 1 december The Gray Space in The Middle hosts a specialized book fair from 11:00 to 18:00. During that same afternoon, a panel discussion on the theme 'Backlash in print: publishing as an artistic practice' is happening at Onze Ambassade (West Den Haag), from 15:00 to 16:30. Astrid Vorstermans, founder and publisher at Valiz will take part in this discussion, together with: Moritz Grünke (Gloria Glitzer/Herbarium Riso/Miss Read), Aymeric Mansoux (Piet Zwart Institute), Karin de Jong (PrintRoom) and artist Karina Zavidova.

This panel discussion will explore the possibilities and necessities of publishing as an artistic practice. As a new generation of artists embraces publishing as a way of sharing knowledge and producing art, the practice of publishing changes. Books that are part of a creative practice require different reading and present a challenge for collectors and librarians alike. Artists’ books can defy classification, become sculptural objects or bridge the digital and the tangible. Does the term ‘artists’ book’ still suffice? According to artist-author Michalis Pichler, in our digital age, publishing as an artistic practice seems to go beyond ‘the book’. However, print also offers a tactile alternative in a digital world. In recent years, the Risograph stencil duplicator has been embraced by artists as a tool for art, dissemination and community building. What is the impact of the Riso revolution on publishing as an artistic practice? What is the future of the artists’ book?
