Berend Strik (Nijmegen, The Netherlands, 1960) is mostly known for his embroideries, which are often based on photographs. In these works, the softness and gossamer quality of the material usually contrasts with the harshness of the subjects – pornography, for instance. Strik’s oeuvre spans the most diverse array of themes: carnival clubs, cloned sheep, same-sex marriage, new born babies, working mothers, love. In addition to embroidery, Strik makes use of a wide variety of media, including photography, video, stained glass, sculptures and architectonic installations. Body Electric charts Strik’s multi-faceted work. The book was conceived in close collaboration with artist and art historian/critic Sven Lütticken and with Thonik, graphic designers in Amsterdam.
