De Ateliers, established in 1963, is an independent artists’ institute led by visual artists. New talent from the Netherlands and abroad is given the opportunity to develop their practice here, under the guidance of prominent artists who make studio visits every Tuesday. The institute has produced many internationally renowned artists. Blue Tuesdays maps the illustrious history of this unique institution. Art historian Bert Jansen describes how the enthusiasm of such artists as Jan Dibbets, Stanley Brouwn and Carel Visser turned the Haarlem initiative of the turbulent era of the 1960s into an influential workplace that has served as a model for fundamental reforms in art education. Ex-students such as Toon Verhoef, Joep van Lieshout, Aernout Mik, Rob Birza and Erik van Lieshout share their recollection of the heated debates, artistic companionship and other Tuesday experiences. Includes photographs from the institute’s history, along with overviews of all the students and supervising artist who worked at De Ateliers in the past forty years to 2003.
