In Het esthetische denken two crucial books about aesthetics of the French philosopher Jacques Rancière are combined: Le partage du sensible andL’inconscient esthétique
The first text gives a short overview of Rancière’s vision on art and the relation with politics and aesthetics and how this relation developed since the classical antiquity. He clarifies how to look at contemporary art by discussing concepts such as modernity, postmodernism and avant-garde.
In the second text, Rancière shows how Freud proves the relevance of his psychoanalytic theory by using examples from art and literature. At the same time, he clarifies that the aesthetic subconscious and the Freudian subconscious cross paths within aesthetic thinking.
