The Dutch are searching: a shared idea of a common future is a thing of the distant past. The influence of globalization and of other cultures and religions, as well as a series of violent attacks, makes people long for symbols that give voice to what binds them. Until now, this discussion was only conducted within political and religious spheres. In Nieuwe symbolen van Nederland [New Symbols for the Netherlands] the cultural field speaks up and tries to give direction to questions such as: ‘Can the arts develop symbols that express our shared values?’, and ‘What might those values be?’.
