An extensive intellectual biography on Jean Leering (1934-2005), the highly active museum director (Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven 1964-73, Tropenmuseum Amsterdam 1973-75), documenta 4 curator (1986), engaged educator, activist, writer and organizer. Influenced by Willem Sandberg’s ideas on the museum as a place where the visitor’s consciousness should be activated, he was committed to developing new models for exhibiting and exhibitions. Four decades after his retirement from the Van Abbe and Tropenmuseum, a new generation of young curators and museum directors is generously borrowing from and revisiting his ideas on the role of the museum in society.
